Dr. David Hunter Cherwek has dedicated his career to the growing field of global ophthalmology and has always enjoyed connecting talented eye health professionals around the world. 
 
Through the David Hunter Cherwek, MD Award for Global Ophthalmology, we will connect promising, ophthalmology residents and fellows outside of the United States with an opportunity to attend the Global Ophthalmology Summit to examine how they can best find mentorship, inspiration and opportunities to include global eye health into their career.

This award and accompanying travel grant will be presented to an outstanding ophthalmology resident or fellow that has shown extraordinary promise to contribute to global ophthalmology.  

Eligibility

Ophthalmology residents and fellows outside of the United States with a sincere interest and passion for a career-long commitment to global ophthalmology are able to apply. To submit an application for the award you must submit an abstract for the Global Ophthalmology Summit. In your application you will be required to share (500 words) how you plan to contribute to improving global eye care. Read abstract guidelines

Abstract/Award Application Deadline 2024

Global Ophthalmology Summit abstract/award deadlines are: 

  • Early Acceptance: March 1

  • Final Acceptance: May 1

Award notification will be sent by May 31.

 

Award

This award will provide a promising ophthalmology resident or fellow outside of the United States exposure to the world of global ophthalmology and career development. The awardee will:

  • receive a travel grant of up to $5,000 USD to attend the 2024 Global Ophthalmology Summit

  • be invited to speak,

  • receive a plaque
